Description du contenu de l'enseignement

  1. Oscillating dipole (emission of E-M waves, electric potential / electric field radiated, long range approximation, polarization of the sky, antenna)
  2. Reflection / refraction at interface between two dielectric media (Fresnel coefficient, Brewster incidence)
  3. Guided Propagation (coaxial cable, optical cable, modes, wave guide, cutoff pulsation)
  4. Signal treatment (building a wave packet, group / phase velocities, real / Fourier fields, modulation / demodulation, decomposition of a signal)
  5. Modern Physics (photon, wave-particle duality of matter, de Broglie, Schrödinger)
  6. Modern microscopy (electronic microscopy, tunnel effect and STM)
  7. Laser (states, populations, steady regime)
  8. Magnetic resonance – Imaging (NMR, Larmor precession).

Compétences à acquérir

  • Introducing the concepts of modern physics discoveries (XIX and XX centuries : quantum state, electromagnetic radiation, wave-particle duality) and their application.
  • Application of electromagnetism and waves to situations.
  • The main goal of this course is to give to the students a better insight about electromagnetism by applying it to special cases. It is also a good way to introduce them to the groundbreaking ideas and concepts that once shuffled the perception of the world by scientists. Even though it is an introduction, students should be able to understand the general working principle of modern devices that make use of these discoveries.
