Description du contenu de l'enseignement

Particle characterization, shape, size, specific area, particle size measurement, densities. Motion of particles in a fluid. Sedimentation, decantation equipment, sizing and scale-up. Flow through a porous medium. Darcy& Koseny’s law. Filtration theory, constant pressure & constant rate cake filtration, filtration equipment, sizing and scale-up. Fluidization, minimum fluidizing velocity & pressure drop, fluidization regimes. Drying of solids: mechanism, drying rate curves, drying equipment operation.

Compétences à acquérir

The students will understand the basic concepts and will get basic knowledge on unit operations on solids. Some of these elementary processes like sedimentation, filtration, fluidization, drying will be presented to achieve elementary knowledge in order to understand process equipments and their design concept. At the end of this course the student will be able to : - deal with different characterization parameters of particles and equipment in order to assess them, - understand and calculate solid particles parameters in motion in fluid, - analyze filtration data and select systems based on requirements, - Estimate filtration area, - describe the sedimentation, centrifugation, drying and fluidisation phenomena and design basically industrial unit, - design a column of particle with a fluid circulation, - describe two modes of drying and industrial drying equipment
